I’m just curious about the reasoning and/or experimentation process that led to the choice. How did she come to that decision? What other options did she consider besides handwriting? Was your larger team, including the artists, even coming at this design process from the standpoint of classic ornithological compilations? Or did they come at it from a completely different perspective?Īnyway, these questions aren’t intended to imply any dissatisfaction with the choice. The shift from serif to sans-serif is consistent with modern trends in font selection, yet I’m still left curious what led to the decision to use this **handwriting-like** casual font (Cardenio Modern?) instead of a less flavorful sans-serif font similar to the cards’ flavor footnotes (e.g., Joya Sans?). In contrast, although Wingspan uses a script for the birds’ formal names, it deviates from the traditional serif font and instead uses a handwriting-like font for the birds’ common names and headings. I’m specifically curious if her choice of fonts was at all affected by the fonts traditionally used in classic collections of ornithological art, which were often paired with a cursive/script font in illustrations (e.g., google for “coracias garrula”) or a formal serif font in engravings (e.g., google for “turtur lophotes”). They contribute to the game’s unique feel, both with respect to other Stonemaier games and to other games on the market. Jamey, am I right in assuming that Christine Santana picked the fonts in Wingspan? I think they’re very nicely selected. I will quit whining now, it is what it is but my 2 cents is that this particular card should be amended. Obviously some bonus cards will have greater advantage depending on how the person builds there board, but this particular card did not seem to reflect the players building strategy, she just got lots of bonus points. Or, should I have gotten 7 points for each platform/star bird card? From other peoples comments, we gathered that it would be 7 points not 56 points, which seems reasonable but at the same time, it seemed out of balance for the person holding the bird counter card to gain such a great advantage since so many of the bird cards had bird powers. I had 8 birds with either the platform or star symbol so I got 7 points. I had a platform builder card which read “birds with a platform nest”, 4-5 birds get 4 feathers and 6+ birds get 7 feathers. For example, at the end of the game, my daughter had the bird counter bonus card which read “birds with a bird power” get 2 feathers per bird. We have enjoyed learning to play Wingspan but I am not sure of some of the scoring.
